Born in Syria based in Dubai, Special K (Mohammed Kamal) has spent over two decades shaping the Middle East's underground electronic music scene. From founding the Desert Dream community to representing Syria at Expo 2020 Dubai, his journey has been driven by a passion for music, culture and connection. Blending organic house with oriental influences and hypnotic grooves, Special K now embarks on his Mission to Mars.
Special K, or as many know you in the desert, Papa Kamal—it's a real pleasure to have you with us. Born in Syria and now based in the UAE, you've become one of the driving forces behind the Middle East's underground electronic music scene. But you're much more than a DJ or producer. Through projects like Desert Dream, Sound of Dunes, Sacred Circle, Love Corner, and your Trinity Festival collaborations, you've built communities and created immersive experiences that connect music, art, and culture. I love your motto, "If you can dream it, you can do it," because it really shines through in everything you create. Your Mission to Mars mix is a perfect example—starting with earthy, tribal rhythms before evolving into something expansive and cosmic, taking listeners on a journey from the dunes to the stars.

Describe a heart warming, skin tingling, goosey memorable moment from your musical journey so far?
Watching people from completely different backgrounds dancing together in the desert during sunrise no language barriers, just rhythm. That’s when I realized this is bigger than parties. It’s about unity.
If you can name anything, what is your best ever / worse ever musical purchase?
Best: My first proper controller.
Worst: Cheap headphones never disrespect your ear.s
